His Favorite Color Is Green

As I’ve continued my journey of faith and my walk with the Lord, I’ve found myself noticing things that I never paid much attention to before.

One of those things is the color green.

The truth is, my favorite color has always been olive.

That goes all the way back to when I was in high school, working in the clothing industry at a traditional men’s clothier in downtown Napa. Craig Williamson owned the store, and Jack Doshier was the manager. Jack taught me everything about traditional men’s clothing—how to custom fit a suit, how to tailor it properly, how to accessorize it with Ferrell Reed ties, the importance of cuffs, fabrics, tailoring, and all the little details that made traditional men’s clothing so timeless.

Somewhere along the way, I fell in love with an olive drab gabardine suit. I just thought it looked incredible. You could accessorize it with a burgundy belt, burgundy penny loafers, a crisp blue Oxford button-down shirt, and just the right tie. There was something about that olive color that I loved.

Years later, as I grew in my faith, I found myself looking at that same color in an entirely different way.

Whether I was standing in my backyard, walking down a fairway on the golf course, or remembering those days on a football field with the smell of freshly cut grass, I couldn’t help but notice all the different shades of green that surrounded me.

I would look at the pine trees, the eucalyptus trees, the palm trees, the grass, the shrubs, and the plants.

One color.

Yet so many incredible shades.

I found myself thinking, “Maybe green is God’s favorite color.”

One color, expressed in endless variety.

One day I shared that thought with someone. I said, “I think God’s favorite color is green because of all the different shades.”

They smiled and said, “It’s not just the shades. It’s the textures.”

They were right.

Every tree has its own texture. Every leaf feels different. Every plant has its own fragrance. A eucalyptus doesn’t look or smell like a pine. A pine doesn’t look or feel like a palm. Yet they’re all green.

Again, one color, expressed in countless beautiful ways.

As I stand and look out at God’s creation, I’m amazed by His creativity. Everywhere I look, I see His fingerprints. The more I pay attention, the more I see the beauty of the One who created it all.

It always takes me back to His Word.

Jesus said, “See the birds of the sky, that they don’t sow, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns. Your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you of much more value than they?”

Every morning I watch the hawks soar overhead. I hear the sparrows singing in the trees. They remind me that our heavenly Father knows exactly what they need, and He faithfully provides for them.

Then I think about the flowers around our yard.

Jesus also said, “Why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow. They don’t toil, neither do they spin, yet I tell you that even Solomon in all his glory was not dressed like one of these.”

What beauty God has woven into His creation.

So many mornings I’ve walked outside before sunrise to spend time with Him. As the sky begins to brighten and another day begins, these words often come to mind:

“The heavens declare the glory of God. The expanse shows his handiwork.”

God reveals Himself in so many ways.

He reveals Himself through His Word.

He reveals Himself through His Son, Jesus Christ.

And He reveals Himself every day through the beauty of His creation.

My prayer is that as you spend time in His Word, your eyes will become more aware of His presence all around you. That you’ll begin to see Him in the ordinary things—in the birds that sing, the trees that sway in the wind, the smell of freshly cut grass, the flowers that bloom, and yes, maybe even in the many shades of green that surround you.

Creation has a way of pointing us back to the Creator.

So the next time you step outside, pause for just a moment.

Take a deep breath.

Look around.

Maybe you’ll notice something you’ve never noticed before.

Maybe you’ll see another shade of green.

And maybe, just maybe, you’ll find yourself smiling as you remember that our Creator reveals Himself in the beauty of His creation
